Man in the White Tuxedo

This is without a doubt the strangest song we’ve ever written.  The story in this song - and most of the words - came to me in a flash.  I could really see these people - it was like watching a movie.  I have no idea who they are or what it means, but it continues to haunt me to this day.

Now, here’s a little puzzle, least it puzzles me
But I’ll tell you right from the start
That I don’t have any answers so if an answer’s what you want
You’ll have to find it in your heart

I remember the night I saw them, coming home from the late shift at four
I heard the pop of a cork, the clink of a glass
I stood there on the corner and watched them go past

The man in the white tuxedo and the woman in the sparkly dress
There is not a one among you who would not be impressed
They wore fancy clothes and they put on airs
And she had diamonds in her hair
The man in the white tuxedo and the woman in the sparkly dress

They laughed, they danced, they sang a song; I can still recall the tune
I remember somehow it made me sad
But I remember that their singing wasn’t all that bad

The man in the white tuxedo and the woman in the sparkly dress
There is not a one among you who would not be impressed
They laughed and they danced and they drank champagne
Then all of a sudden, it started to rain
And then the man in the white tuxedo kissed the woman in the sparkly dress

[Instrumental break]

Well, here’s the part that puzzles me; maybe you can understand why
Why when he kissed her did she walk away?
And why did he stand there and cry?

The man in the white tuxedo and the woman in the sparkly dress
There is not a one among you who would not be impressed
There he stood with his glass of champagne
Alone and crying in the pouring rain.
The man in the white tuxedo...
